Dr. Satyakam Sharma of the Savannah College of Art and Design outlined a compelling vision for sustainable innovation through circular design. Drawing from his background in industrial design and a PhD in sustainability, Sharma emphasized that addressing climate challenges requires more than just better products—it demands a shift in how we design for matter, mind and society.

Rethinking Sustainability: A Systems-Based Framework

“Matter,” according to Sharma, involves the material and technical aspects of design—choices like using biodegradable materials, enabling disassembly and applying life cycle analysis to measure impact. “Mind” addresses the perceptual and behavioral side of change, helping individuals adopt sustainable habits through storytelling, design cues and user feedback. “Society” emphasizes the need for equity and community engagement, ensuring that sustainable innovation uplifts and includes a broad range of voices. This holistic framework underpins SCAD’s Design for Sustainability program, where student-led projects bring these principles to life.

Designing for Impact: Student Projects That Reduce Carbon Footprints

Sharma showcased several student projects that translated this framework into measurable environmental gains. One team tackled the surprisingly high impact of battery use in small appliances by redesigning a handheld milk frother.

After conducting a life cycle analysis, they discovered batteries—not plastic—were the main source of emissions. Their solution: a crank-powered frother made from biopolymers, cutting environmental impact by 96%.

Another team focused on office printing, identifying that 40% of print jobs were waste due to formatting inefficiencies. They designed a smarter print dialog that evaluated job efficiency and suggested real-time edits. A gamified dashboard encouraged users to improve their print habits, potentially reducing office print waste by 60%. These projects underscored Sharma’s core message—that data and creativity, when combined, can drive deep reductions in carbon emissions.

Behavior, Visibility and Empowerment

Several projects explored how small behavioral shifts, when scaled, can lead to significant carbon savings. For example, phantom energy from idle electronics accounts for up to 10% of household energy use. Rather than focusing only on product redesign, students targeted awareness. They proposed integrating phantom load data into power bills, mailing educational brochures and launching online campaigns. The aim was to make the invisible visible, giving consumers the knowledge and motivation to change.

Sharma stressed that empowering users with feedback can shift habits over time. This approach was reflected in another project that addressed smartphone overuse. A student-developed app tracked screen time and its associated carbon impact, delivering insights like “42% reduction in phone usage today.” By translating abstract environmental costs into tangible feedback, the app encouraged more mindful digital behavior.

Material Circularity and Low-Tech Innovation

Some of the most effective solutions came from rethinking materials and product lifespans. A team redesigned a suitcase using recycled components and modular construction, allowing for easy repair and full disassembly. The elimination of rivets and zippers simplified recycling and extended the product’s life, resulting in a 47% improvement in environmental performance.

Another team tackled heat waste in espresso pots. By redesigning the base to better match stove burner sizes, they reduced energy loss by up to 87%. Students also found creative ways to repurpose waste, such as turning discarded vinyl billboards into waterproof umbrellas—blending function with a circular ethos.
