The Okefenokee Swamp, one of the most ecologically intact and climate-critical landscapes in North America, faces escalating threats from proposed mining activities along its fragile border. In a compelling discussion, Rena Ann Peck (Georgia Rivers) and Kim Bednarek (Okefenokee Swamp Park & Adventures) emphasized the swamp’s global significance, hydrologic sensitivity and the urgent need for long-term protection strategies rooted in science, storytelling and systemic investment.

A Natural Climate Powerhouse at Risk

The Okefenokee Swamp functions as a vast natural carbon sink, holding an estimated 200 million metric tons of peat—equivalent to 113 million metric tons of carbon or 415 million metric tons of CO₂. This is more than the combined carbon storage of all Georgia’s forests, making it an irreplaceable tool in climate mitigation. Unlike northern peatlands that require costly restoration, the Okefenokee remains saturated and self-sustaining, storing carbon in its dense, waterlogged substrate.

However, the proposed mining of Trail Ridge—an ancient geological barrier forming the swamp’s eastern boundary—threatens to destabilize this balance. Lowering the water table through excavation could dry out peat layers and dramatically increase fire risk. If ignited, these fires can burn deep into the ground, releasing tens of millions of tons of carbon dioxide. Modeling suggests that combustion of just four feet of peat could emit 28 million metric tons of CO₂, roughly a quarter of Georgia’s annual emissions. One panelist warned that such a shift could transform the Okefenokee from a climate solution into a major carbon source.

A Globally Rare and Intact Ecosystem

The Okefenokee is not just ecologically rich—it is remarkably undisturbed. Unlike the Everglades, it has avoided large-scale drainage or development, with past impacts affecting less than 1% of its 650 square miles. Its intact hydrology and fire-adapted peatland system make it the largest unspoiled freshwater peat deposit in the subtropical world. This rarity supports biodiversity and maintains ecological processes that are vanishing globally.

Fire plays a critical role in this balance, particularly in maintaining upland longleaf pine systems. However, when peat layers lose their moisture, fires can smolder underground, destroying the very foundation of the swamp’s ecosystems.

Protecting the peat’s hydrologic integrity is essential to ensuring fire remains a regenerative force rather than a destructive one.

The swamp’s nomination as a UNESCO World Heritage Site further affirms its global significance. If accepted, it would become the first such designation for a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service site and the first in Georgia. This recognition could bring new international attention, funding and responsible ecotourism to support the surrounding rural economies—offering an alternative to risky extractive industries.

Hydrologic Fragility and the Far-Reaching Impacts of Mining

Panelists stressed that mining’s potential damage extends beyond its physical footprint. Even a 500-acre test site on Trail Ridge could alter the swamp’s broader hydrology. Because the ridge acts as a natural dam, drawing down groundwater could cause seepage and drying effects throughout the swamp’s edge. This interconnectedness is well-documented and underscores the risks of underestimating cumulative environmental consequences.

Firefighting costs offer a stark preview of what could lie ahead. The 2007 fire alone cost $100 million to suppress and caused another $113 million in timber losses. With Georgia investing far less than neighboring Florida in fire infrastructure, the current system remains vulnerable. Proactive planning, cross-state coordination and more robust investment are needed to prevent future ecological and economic disasters.

Cultural Identity, Public Support and Long-Term Stewardship

Beyond its ecological and climate roles, the Okefenokee holds deep cultural significance. Known as the “trembling Earth,” it embodies the wild heart of Georgia. Protecting it requires not only legal and scientific action but also cultural visibility. Storytelling through documentaries, immersive tours and local art is helping build emotional connections that can galvanize public will and political momentum.

Efforts now focus on thanking supportive legislators, building relationships and laying the groundwork for future conservation funding and easements. One panelist emphasized that cultivating public pride and emotional resonance is just as critical as hydrological models and carbon metrics.
