Bill Nussey of Tech Square Ventures and Latanza Adjei of Georgia Power unpacked how the electric grid is evolving from a centralized, utility-led system into a dynamic, participatory infrastructure shaped by community-scale technologies and customer engagement. They made the case that while innovation is essential, so is preserving the grid’s foundational promise of universal, equitable access.

The Grid as a Public Duty, Not a Consumer Product

The session opened with the assertion that electricity is not a luxury or product of choice—it’s a public obligation. One panelist emphasized that a utility’s “duty to serve” means providing safe, clean, reliable and affordable energy to every customer, regardless of income, geography, or personal energy investments. This principle underpins how utilities invest in and maintain the grid, prioritizing resilience and access over market flexibility. Unlike optional consumer goods, electricity requires long-term infrastructure commitments—poles, lines and service crews—that reach every corner of a service area. This obligation becomes even more critical as utilities balance innovation with inclusion in a rapidly transforming energy landscape.

The discussion highlighted how the grid remains a marvel of scale and coordination, particularly in times of crisis. During a major hurricane in 2024, one utility mobilized over 20,000 personnel from 33 states and Canada to restore power, showcasing the depth of national utility collaboration. A panelist noted that even after basic service was restored, rebuilding smart grid control systems took months, revealing both the complexity and fragility of modern grid infrastructure. These systems are vital—they reroute power during outages and optimize delivery in real time, minimizing disruption and increasing efficiency.

A resilient grid depends not just on hard assets, but on nationwide coordination and intelligent control.

Decentralized Energy: From Wikipedia to the Power Grid

One speaker compared the rise of distributed energy resources (DERs) to the structure of Wikipedia—decentralized, user-driven and powerful, but only functional with oversight and rules. DERs such as rooftop solar, home batteries and EVs add resilience and flexibility, but also require coordination to maintain safety and stability. Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems (DERMS) were described as conductors managing a sprawling, real-time orchestra of inputs and outputs. As more customers generate, store, and even sell energy, utilities must integrate this activity without compromising reliability for others. DERs democratize energy, but they also demand smarter oversight than ever before.

Storage, Smart Tech and the New Energy Hierarchy

The panel addressed the common misconception that solar alone can power the grid. While solar energy is clean and abundant, it is intermittent and cannot serve demand during nights or cloudy days without storage. Batteries, as one panelist explained, are essential to make solar reliable and transform it from a variable source into a consistent supply option. Utilities are now designing programs to encourage storage and smart EV charging that align with grid needs. This fits into a broader strategy to shift customer behavior using tools like smart thermostats, off-peak EV charging incentives and time-based pricing—measures that reduce peak load and improve overall efficiency.

The Grid’s Future Mirrors the Arc of Computing

Panelists drew a compelling parallel between the evolution of computing and the electric grid. What began with centralized mainframes transitioned to PCs, then to smartphones and cloud computing. Similarly, the grid is shifting from centralized plants to a hybrid of large-scale and distributed sources. This transition unlocks innovation at the edges of the system, just as smartphones enabled a global ecosystem of apps and developers. Yet, like the internet, the grid still needs central coordination to remain stable and fair. The panel concluded that a smart, equitable and resilient grid will rely on both top-down investment and bottom-up innovation.
